There is a lot to consider when choosing a fragrance.  Perfume/cologne is a statement of someone’s personality.  So when choosing a fragrance, choose a scent that would describe something about you. For example, if you think you’re sexy, pick a fragrance that you think promotes that characteristic.

Commonly, scents are described as spicy, floral, sweet, fruity, fresh or sexy.  It’s important to know that different scents release different feelings in people.  While spicier fragrances like musk are said to be an aphrodisiac, floral scents are said to be calming.

Your choice of fragrance should depend on the occasion (formal or informal), the time (day or night), the season and your mood.  Generally, use lighter scents for informal events, daywear, and during Spring/Summer.  Use heavier scents for formal occasions, evening and during Fall/Winter. Keep in mind that one fragrance will not smell the same on every body. According to The Fragrance Foundation, “Each of us has our own unique odor identity which is the sum total of our heredity (genes), skin type (dry/oily/light/dark), hair color, diet, whether or not we take medications, are under stress, the environment in which we live, etc.” So just because you like a fragrance on someone else does not mean you will like it on you.  This is why when testing different scents you should apply the perfume on skin, rather than just smelling the bottle or a scent card.

Now that you have chosen your scent, it should be applied in just the right places for proper effect.  Perfume is best applied to pulse points: the inner wrists, behind the ears, the lower neck, cleavage, the crook of the elbow and the back of the knees.  For a pure long-lasting scent, dab or spray the perfume lightly on your skin, rather than rubbing your wrists together. Most important, do not over-apply. Subtlety is the key to proper application.
