Although tweed has its origins in the United Kingdom where it was worn primarily by the lowest laborers, through the years tweed has undergone a major fashion change. When Coco Chanel made tweed popular back in the 1950s, it was used mainly in suits, but the newer way of wearing tweed is more casual.
For women, tweed outerwear, dresses, skirts, and trousers are all popular. According Essortment in their article, “The Fashion Comeback of Tweed in Designer Clothing and Accessories,” “[T]weed is catching on as accents to other material. For example, there are trouser designs that have tweed trim to accent the solid black. Also, tweed is being used as trim on jackets, dresses, and other garments.” Furthermore, tweed has become extremely popular in accessories such as handbags, shoes and hats.
Beyond its traditional use in suits, tweed is showing up in all types of menswear. “It has been popular this season with many designers so there is a big selection of tweed based clothing items for you to pick from to suit your individual style and taste,” says, Fashion Bible in their article “Men’s Fashion Trend – Tweed.” If tweed trousers, shirts or outerwear are not for you, try a tweed hat, tie or scarf.
The fact that tweed has been used in both men’s and women’s clothes and accessories in so many forms means this trend is here to stay. However, you don’t need to dress head to toe in tweed, rather the trend works best when used subtly. For men try wearing a tweed blazer with jeans or a tweed vest with black trousers and a solid shirt or just pop an outfit with a tweed scarf or hat. Women have much more creative flexibility when it comes to dressing, so try a tweed dress with a black belt, or a tweed boyfriend blazer with skinny jeans or even accentuate a solid dress with tweed pumps or flats.
